Safe & Responsible Play
Responsible gaming pledge
White Hat Gaming Limited is committed to promoting responsible gaming and to supporting players in keeping gambling an enjoyable form of entertainment rather than a source of harm. Gambling is intended solely for adults who are of legal age in their country of residence. Anyone who feels their gambling is causing difficulty, or who is concerned on behalf of another person, is encouraged to make use of the tools and resources set out below.
Risk indicators
Certain patterns of behaviour may suggest that gambling has stopped being a harmless pastime. Players and those close to them should be alert to signs such as the following:
- Spending more money or time on gambling than was originally intended
- Chasing losses in an attempt to win back money already spent
- Borrowing money, selling possessions, or neglecting bills to fund gambling
- Gambling in secret or lying to family and friends about the extent of play
- Feeling restless, anxious or irritable when trying to cut down or stop
- Letting gambling interfere with work, studies, relationships or sleep
Self-ban options
Players who wish to stop gambling, whether for a fixed period or indefinitely, may ask a licensed operator to close their account and bar them from further play. Such self-exclusion requests are generally binding on the operator for the period chosen and cannot be reversed early by the player, even if they later ask to resume play.
In addition to arrangements made directly with an individual operator, a national self-exclusion register, GAMSTOP (gamstop.co.uk), allows a player to exclude themselves from all licensed online gambling operators in one step. Once registered, the exclusion applies across every participating operator at the same time, removing the need to contact each one separately.
Setting limits
Licensed operators are generally required to offer tools that allow players to keep their gambling within bounds they choose themselves. These commonly include:
- Deposit limits, restricting the amount of money that can be added to an account over a day, week or month
- Loss limits, capping the amount a player may lose within a set period
- Time limits, restricting the overall length of time an account may be used for gambling
- Session limits, setting a maximum duration for a single period of play
- Reality checks, which pause play at regular intervals to show how long a session has lasted and how much has been spent
These limits can usually be set, lowered or tightened at any time. Increases to an existing limit typically only take effect after a short cooling-off period, giving the player time to reconsider.
Support resources
Anyone who is worried about their own gambling, or about someone else's, can speak in confidence to GamCare - National Gambling Helpline 0808 8020 133 (gamcare.org.uk). The helpline offers free and confidential support at any time.
General anonymous self-help groups, run on a peer-support basis by people with personal experience of gambling problems, also exist and can offer an additional source of understanding and encouragement alongside professional help.
